Chapter 9 - THE ROOM MARINA PREPARED
Marina lived in a townhouse twelve minutes from the estate.
She had converted one guest room into a nursery.
That sounded terrible.
Context made it less simple.
She claimed Helena asked her to prepare it for:
“Overflow infant care.”
Triplets? No, only one baby. Here single baby. Better: for family overnight care when baby came.
Celeste had never approved an overnight.
Marina bought:
Crib.
Changing table.
Infant monitor.
White-noise machine.
Diapers.
Formula.
A bassinet.
Nothing illegal.
Aunts buy things.
Then scheduled appointment.
A private pediatric practice had an intake under:
INFANT RAVELLO — CAREGIVER MARINA RAVELLO.
Date:
Six days after Celeste’s expected delivery window.
No baby name yet.
The clinic receptionist said Helena made the appointment.
What did Helena say?
“The mother may be unavailable during postpartum recovery.”
Did Marina know?
“Yes.”
She had received confirmation.
Did she cancel?
No.
Why?
“I thought Damian would eventually approve.”
Again.
Assumed consent.
Then a postpartum nurse agency.
A booking deposit for two weeks at Marina’s townhouse.
Paid by Helena.
Marina knew.
Then the most disturbing practical detail.
A driver schedule.
Hospital discharge pickup.
Vehicle:
Marina’s SUV.
Passenger:
Infant.
No Celeste listed.
Who created it?
Helena’s assistant, acting on Helena’s instructions.
The assistant said she assumed Celeste would be traveling separately.
Why?
Helena told her.
Again.
No kidnapping van.
No fake passports.
Ordinary logistics used to make an extraordinary assumption feel normal.
Then an email from Helena to Marina:
The first week is everything. Once the baby sleeps in your house, Damian will not create a scandal moving him back and forth.
My jaw tightened.
There.
Helena’s strategy was not law alone.
It was inertia.
Create a fact.
Then make changing the fact feel disruptive.
Marina replied:
He may.
Helena:
He won’t if Celeste is gone.
Gone where?

That remained unanswered.
