Chapter 7 - THE STATEMENT I MADE MARINA SIGN
My mistake happened in my study.
Three days after Celeste came home from the hospital.
Marina requested to collect personal belongings from the guest wing.
I allowed it.
Security remained outside.
Then I asked her to come to my study.
She did.
Two bodyguards stood near the doors.
Not threatening by Ravello standards.
Terrifying by normal ones.
I placed a written statement on the desk.
It said Marina knew Helena intended to remove Celeste from the home after birth and transfer the baby into Marina’s care.
Some of that was supported.
Some was my interpretation.
“Sign it.”
Marina stared.
“No.”
“You signed Mother’s papers.”
“I told police what I knew.”
“Sign this.”
Her face changed.
“Or what?”
I should have stopped.
Instead:
“Or you leave every Ravello business, property and trust committee today.”
There.
Power.
Not physical.
Still coercion.
Marina looked at the men near the door.
Then at me.
“You’re becoming her.”
That should have stopped me too.
It didn’t.
“Sign.”
She signed.
My victory lasted nineteen minutes.
Miriam walked in after Marina called her own attorney.
She read the statement.
Then looked at me.
“What did you do?”
“She signed.”
“Under what circumstances?”
“She was in my study.”
“With two security men.”
“They work here.”
“You threatened her positions.”
“She helped Helena try to take my child.”
“Then evidence can prove it.”
I stared.
Miriam picked up the paper with two fingers.
“This is useless.”
“It’s signed.”
“Congratulations. So were Helena’s papers.”
That landed.
Hard.
I sat down.
Miriam continued:
“You do not get to complain about coercive signatures while collecting your own.”
I looked at the door Marina had already left through.
No excuse.
The statement never went to police as evidence of truth.
Miriam notified Marina’s lawyer that we would not rely on it.
Marina later described the incident in the family case.
Correctly.
Damian Ravello had tried to force her to sign an account under threat of economic exclusion.
That cost me credibility.
It also cost the relationship.
For weeks, Marina refused even lawyer-mediated family communication unless absolutely necessary.
I deserved that.
Then the business positions.
Could I remove her?
Some.
Not all.
Ravello Foundation board membership required board action.
Two property LLC roles required member votes.
Her private trust distributions could not be cut off by me.
Good.
Systems are useful when family members become irrational.
I took no removal action.
Not because I forgave.
