Chapter 23 - THE TRIAL BEGINS WITH A SIGNATURE
The prosecution did not begin with dirty water.
It began with handwriting.
Large courtroom display.
Celeste’s genuine signature from the household acknowledgment.
Then the signature-confirmation specimen.
Then the forged custody signature.
The forensic examiner explained:
Natural variation.
Line fluency.
Pen pressure.
Hesitation.
Simulation.
The jury did not need to become handwriting experts.
They needed to understand why the conclusion was not based on my fifteen-second observation at the marble table.
Then Helena’s known handwriting.
The note.
The practice sheet.
The file history.
The printer log.
No single item carried the case.
Together they formed a chain.
Then Naomi testified about legal effect.
The prosecutor asked:
“Could these private documents by themselves permanently transfer custody of an unborn child from two living parents to an aunt?”
“No.”
“Could they still be used to deceive institutions or create pressure?”
“Yes.”
Defense objected to speculation.
Sustained in part.
Naomi narrowed.
“A hospital or court should independently verify authority. But presenting documents as genuine when they are forged can create confusion and trigger processes.”
Good.
No magic papers.
Then the assistant.
Paige testified Helena instructed her to schedule:
Nurse.
Pediatrician.
Transport.
No direct confirmation from Celeste.
Then the folder:
TRANSITION.
The judge admitted relevant portions.
No family gossip.
No unrelated documents.
The jury saw:
First week is everything.
Once baby sleeps in Marina’s house, Damian will not create a scandal moving him back and forth.
Then:
If Celeste goes to parents, tell Damian she abandoned postpartum plan.
The courtroom became very quiet.
