Chapter 24 - CELESTE TELLS THEM WHY SHE KNELT
Celeste testified on Day Two.
No Leo in court.
He stayed with a caregiver Celeste chose.
The prosecutor asked about the papers.
Celeste explained:
Household acknowledgment.
Phone taken.
Signature confirmation.
Fear.
Then:
“Did Helena physically force your hand to sign?”
“No.”
“Did she threaten to injure you if you refused?”
“No.”
“Why did you sign?”
“I wanted the situation to end.”
Then:
“Could you have shouted for security?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
Celeste looked toward the jury.
“Because I was raised to think calling armed security into a family argument would make me responsible for whatever happened next.”
That sentence implicated more than Helena.
It implicated me.
Good.
Then the water.
“Why were you kneeling?”
“Helena told me to clean the floor.”
“Could you stand?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“I was eight months pregnant, scared, and trying to keep the room calm until Damian’s meeting ended.”
Then:
“What did Helena say?”
Celeste repeated it.
“Scrub faster. Marina will raise the heir better.”
No embellishment.
Then defense.
“Mrs. Ravello, you dislike Helena?”
“Yes.”
“Before this incident?”
“Sometimes.”
“Did you want her removed from the estate?”
“I wanted boundaries.”
“Did you want Marina excluded from the baby’s life?”
“No.”
“Did you want Marina making parenting decisions?”
“No.”
Then:
“You signed a postpartum household document voluntarily?”
Celeste paused.
“No.”
“You physically signed it?”
“Yes.”
“That is not what I asked.”
“I physically signed it. I did not feel free to refuse.”
Good distinction.
Then defense attacked legal knowledge.
“You are an educated adult?”
“Yes.”
“You understood Helena could not literally own your unborn child?”
“I understood that later.”
“But at the table?”
“I had a packet with my name and signature saying my child would stay with Marina.”
“Did you read every page?”
“No.”
“So your statement ‘she made me sign away our baby’ was based on panic?”
“Yes.”
There.
The defense thought that helped.
Maybe it did.
It also showed why forged documents can be powerful without being legally valid.
Then:
“Did Damian ever instruct you to accuse Helena?”
“No.”
“Did Damian hit Helena?”
“Yes.”
“Did that frighten you?”
Celeste looked at me.
“Yes.”
I felt every eye in the room.
Defense:
“So both Helena and Damian frightened you that day.”
“Yes.”
No rescue mythology.
Truth.
Then:
“Why stay with Damian?”
The prosecutor objected.
Relevance.
Judge limited.
Celeste answered only after permission.
“Because he took responsibility for what he did and stopped asking me to pretend family power was the same thing as safety.”
