Chapter 5 - HELENA’S VERSION OF FAMILY LAW
Helena did not speak to police after the first afternoon.
Her lawyer issued a written position.
The documents were:
Private family planning drafts.
Not intended for immediate legal enforcement.
Celeste voluntarily participated in postpartum discussions.
Any signature resemblance was being misinterpreted.
Helena denied forging anything.
Then the water incident.
She called it:
“A household argument during which cleaning water was spilled.”
There was no camera in the dining room.
I had removed interior cameras after Celeste said living under constant recording made the house feel like a casino.
I agreed.
Now Helena’s lawyer used the lack of video.
That did not make me regret the privacy.
Then staff.
Two housekeepers heard raised voices but had been dismissed before the critical part.
One saw Celeste kneeling through the doorway.
Why?
She assumed Celeste had dropped something.
No one saw Helena pour the bucket.
Only Marina.
Marina admitted Helena did.
That was enough corroboration if credible.
Then forged signature.
A forensic document examiner requested originals.
Police and counsel arranged.
Microscopy.
Ink comparison.
Line quality.
Pen lifts.
Pressure.
Potential tracing characteristics.
No one could determine authorship by saying:
It looks like Mother’s handwriting.
My fifteen-second certainty had been emotionally satisfying.
Not scientifically enough.
Then Celeste’s real signature samples.
Marriage license.
Recent medical forms.
Banking documents.
Household acknowledgment from the same afternoon.
Blank signature-confirmation sheet?
Missing.
Still.
Where had it gone?
Police searched Helena’s handbag from the incident only with consent/warrant basis? Helena had taken it when leaving? Actually police may have preserved? Let's say she was allowed to leave with bag after officers confirmed no immediate seizure authority. Later a warrant obtained for relevant docs at her townhouse. Good.
No sheet found initially.
Then Naomi explained something that changed Celeste’s posture.
“Even if Helena perfectly copied your signature, that does not make her Marina’s legal mother.”
Celeste almost laughed.
“I know.”
“No, you know emotionally. I want you to understand legally.”
Then she listed barriers.
No parental consent from Damian.
No court order.
No statutory surrender.
No adoption process.
No valid emergency finding.
No born child yet at time of signing.
No independent counsel for Celeste.
Potential coercion.
Forgery concerns.
The papers were not a trapdoor.
