Chapter 9 - The Secret Meeting
Stellan had met a family-law attorney once before the dinner.
Consultation.
Privileged details unavailable.
But billing record showed date.
Two months earlier.
That alone was not wrongdoing.
Then Agatha met with a private school consultant.
Why?
Benson was public kindergarten.
The consultant also ran a “family structure” coaching business.
Not licensed therapist.
She recommended:
Clear hierarchy.
No bargaining.
Predictable consequences.
Never use food deprivation.
That last sentence was in her written summary.
Agatha ignored it.
Then a text:
STELLAN:
Coach says no food punishments.
AGATHA:
She also says no bargaining.
STELLAN:
Then use screen time.
AGATHA:
Screens don’t matter to him like food.
My chest turned cold.
Stellan:
That sounds bad.
Agatha:
It works.
Then:
STELLAN:
Only if he refuses dinner first.
There.
A limit.
Then Agatha crossed it.
Repeatedly.
Did Stellan know?
Yes, at least by November 12.
AGATHA:
Took plate after eye roll. He begged. Didn’t cave.
Stellan:
Mom.
Agatha:
What?
Stellan:
He was eating?
Agatha:
Yes.
Stellan:
I said no.
Agatha:
And tomorrow he’ll think before rolling eyes.
Stellan did not reply.
Then later that night:
Stellan:
Just don’t make it a whole thing. I can’t fight with Rosalie right now.
There.
Not approval in words.
Permission through surrender.
Then the worst:
Agatha:
When he’s with me more after you file, Rosalie won’t get to sabotage this.
Stellan:
We’re not there yet.
Agatha:
You will be.
No objection to “with me more.”
Then one day later:
Stellan:
Need more school notes first.
That was the bridge.
Punishment.
Documentation.
Custody planning.
All one system.
He had not set out to starve Benson.
He had wanted evidence that structure improved behavior.
Agatha discovered fear produced compliance faster than ordinary consequences.
Stellan knew she crossed lines.
