Chapter 22 - Stellan’s Final Statement
The judge allowed closing testimony on proposed parenting plan.
Stellan said:
“I thought equal custody meant equal worth as a father.”
There.
“I was afraid that if Rosalie had more school nights, everyone would see her as the real parent and me as visitor.”
Honest.
“So I built a schedule I could not personally support.”
Then:
“I planned to use my mother.”
Agatha stiffened.
He continued.
“And I let myself call that fatherhood.”
That was strong.
Then:
“I collected Benson’s behavior because I wanted evidence Rosalie was the problem.”
He looked at me.
“She wasn’t the only problem.”
Good.
Then:
“I saw fewer tantrums at Mom’s and accepted her explanation that structure was working.”
He swallowed.
“I did not ask whether Benson was quieter because he was afraid of losing food.”
Then:
“When he ran to me after she hit him, I froze because I knew if I comforted him, my mother would say I was undoing the system.”
His voice broke.
“My son looked at me and I chose the system.”
Silence.
Then:
“I am asking the court for time with him because I love him. I am not asking the court to pretend I earned it by what I did before.”
That mattered.
No entitlement.
Then my own closing.
“I don’t want Benson taught that one mistake permanently removes a parent.”
I looked at Stellan.
“I also don’t want apologies treated as evidence enough.”

“Let his father earn ordinary trust through ordinary behavior.”
That became the ruling’s spirit.
