Chapter 26 - Ordinary Parenting

Stellan’s additional overnight began.
No incident.
Then another.
Benson complained Dad’s pancakes were “sad.”
Stellan sent photo.
They were.
I laughed.
The parenting app slowly contained less legal language.
More:
Field trip form signed.
He left jacket here.
Dentist Tuesday.
Can you swap weekend for soccer?
Normal.
My medical tie-breaking period expired.
Joint decision-making fully resumed because no new conflict.
That mattered.
I did not cling to special authority just because I once needed it.
Agatha remained limited.
She did not babysit.
Stellan never left Benson alone with her.
No testing.
No “just ten minutes.”
Boundary honored.
My own therapy continued.
I still reacted strongly when Benson said:
“I’m hungry.”
Sometimes immediately offered too much.
Dr. Morris pointed out:
“You are allowed to say dinner is in twenty minutes.”
Right.
Food security does not mean instant gratification.
So one afternoon:
“Mom, snack.”
“Dinner in twenty.”
His face changed.
“Am I red?”
My heart broke.
“No. You’re just twenty minutes from dinner.”
He thought.
“Apple?”
I considered.
“Yes.”
Not because fear.
Because reasonable.
That distinction became easier.
Then my anger diversion officially dismissed.
I framed no certificate.
I kept paperwork.
A reminder that protecting Benson never required pretending my own conduct was harmless.
The crisis faded.
No sequel hidden.

No new evidence.
Just lives becoming boring again.
