Chapter 5 - Agatha’s House
CPS inspected Agatha’s home.
Clean.
Food.
Safe bedroom.
No cages.
No locked pantry.
No obvious neglect environment.
The concern was practice.
Agatha admitted:
She had withheld the remainder of a meal after “disrespect.”
She denied starving Benson.
“He always had breakfast.”
Jonah asked:
“How often?”
“Five or six times.”
Over what period?
Two months.
Then:
“Did he sometimes begin eating before you removed plate?”
She hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Why remove if he was eating?”
“Behavior.”
There.
Not food refusal.
Punishment.
Then slap.
“I shouldn’t have.”
Good.
“Why?”
“He grabbed my wrist.”
Video showed he reached for plate, not wrist.
Agatha corrected after viewing:
“He reached toward me.”
Then:
“I reacted.”
Fine.
No excuse.
Then her philosophy.
“My husband and I raised Stellan with consequences.”
Her husband, George, died eight years earlier.
“Did you withhold meals?”
“Sometimes children went to bed hungry if they were disrespectful.”
Stellan survived.
Again, survival as proof.
Then:
“Why do you believe Rosalie is a problem?”
Agatha’s face tightened.
“She negotiates.”
“Meaning?”
“She asks Benson how he feels about everything.”
“He’s five.”
“Exactly.”
Then:
“She is teaching him adults require permission.”
Jonah said:
“Sometimes they do.”
Agatha looked annoyed.
Then the transition.
CPS asked.
Agatha claimed:
“Stellan had considered separation.”
There.
“When?”
“Months.”
My chest broke when Naomi told me.
Not because marriage was healthy.
Because he had planned without me.
Then:
“He worried Rosalie would get primary custody because she handles most school and doctors.”
True.
“So?”
“I told him to document his parenting.”
Reasonable.
Then:
“And Benson’s behavior?”
Agatha:
“To show structure worked better with us.”
There.
Us.
Not Stellan.
Stellan plus Agatha.
She wanted weekdays.
Why?
Stellan’s job required early mornings.
Agatha lived near school.
She could handle.
A custody structure where Benson spent school week with father technically but much care by grandmother.
That was what “transition” meant.
Then Naomi said:
“They may have been preparing for divorce before you knew.”
I sat.
“Does that matter legally?”
“Planning divorce is not wrongdoing.”
“I know.”
“Documenting child behavior isn’t wrongdoing.”
“I know.”
“Fabricating or manipulating conditions to create favorable evidence is different.”
There.
Had they?
Not yet proven.
Then another message.
AGATHA:
If Rosalie sees him calm here and wild with her, even she has to admit it.
STELLAN:
She’ll say he’s scared.
Agatha:
Then don’t give her that language.
My skin crawled.
Language.
They were managing interpretation.
Then Stellan:
I don’t want him scared.
Agatha:
Then stop being weak.
The same control ran through generations.
Stellan was not Agatha.
But he feared becoming her target too.

That did not excuse what he did to Benson.
It explained why silence was his reflex.
