Chapter 7 - Gareth’s Quiet No
Gareth showed me his messages with Maude.
Not because I demanded passwords forever.
Because trust needed facts.
Three months before:
MAUDE:
Your father never meant Els to take the cabana from me.
GARETH:
The documents say otherwise.
MAUDE:
Documents are not marriage.
GARETH:
This isn’t about your marriage anymore.
Then:
MAUDE:
Sign the family settlement.
GARETH:
No.
Good.
Next week:
MAUDE:
Tavia put you up to this.
GARETH:
She doesn’t know about settlement.
My stomach twisted.
He had protected me from knowledge as though ignorance was a gift.
Then:
MAUDE:
Exactly. Because you know she’d use Elspeth against me.
GARETH:
Stop.
Maude:
Then fix it.
Gareth:
No.
Again.
Quiet no.
No consequence.
Then photos.
Gareth:
Why is Els missing from centennial pictures?
Maude:
Historical committee.
Gareth:
Put her back.
Maude:
You cannot rewrite blood.
Gareth:
She is my daughter.
Maude:
You know what I mean.
Gareth did not reply.
“What happened after?”
“I called her.”
“And?”
“She cried.”
Of course.
“She said Dad had humiliated her by giving away the one place that was theirs.”
“And?”
“I told her I understood.”
“Did you tell her to put Elspeth back?”
“Yes.”
“Did she?”
“I assumed.”
I stared.
“No, Gareth. You hoped.”
He looked down.
Yes.
Then:
“She has always backed down eventually.”
“Did she?”
He thought.
Not really.
She backed down in front of him.
Then acted around him.
That pattern had childhood roots.
Maude avoided direct conflict with Gareth because she feared losing him.
So she did things indirectly.
