Chapter 13 - The Photograph Restored

Quillan sent us a preview of the corrected centennial exhibit.
The Fourth of July photograph.
Full frame.
Gareth.
Me.
Elspeth on his shoulders.
Maude beside Edmund.
Everybody.
No bloodline labels.
Just names and year.
Elspeth stared.
“Grandma was there.”
“Yes.”
“Can she make me gone again?”
“Not from this one.”
She looked at me.
“From family?”
“No.”
Then she frowned.
“But she can not want me.”
There.
Harder.
“Yes.”
I sat beside her.
“People can have feelings we cannot control.”
“So she can think no family.”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“She does not get to turn that thought into rules for your life.”
That distinction mattered.
Family membership is partly relational.
You cannot force love.
But legal parenthood, club rights, inheritance—those are not erased by a grandmother’s opinion.
Elspeth thought.
Then:
“I don’t want her in my birthday picture.”
“Okay.”
Not revenge.

Boundary.
We did not make her perform inclusion while explaining how wrong exclusion had been.
