Chapter 23 - My Own Apology

I had apologized to Elspeth for the kick before.
Then, after my diversion ended and charge was dismissed, I did it again differently.
Not because court required.
“Do you remember me kicking Grandma?”
“Yes.”
“Did it scare you?”
She shrugged.
“Kind of.”
“What part?”
“You were loud.”
I nodded.
“I’m sorry.”
“You said already.”
“I know.”
She looked suspicious.
“Why again?”
“Because sometimes adults repeat apologies when they’re still trying to make themselves feel better.”
Dr. Hart had called me out.
Elspeth laughed.
“So stop.”
I laughed too.
“Okay.”
Then:
“You protected me.”
“I did.”
“With kick?”
I paused.
“I protected you by getting you up and moving between you and Grandma. The kick was anger after.”
She nodded.
“Okay.”
Clear.
I did not need to erase every good impulse because my action crossed a line.
May you like
Nor turn the wrong action into heroism.
Both.
