Chapter 26 - Family Picture

The centennial exhibit finally opened.

One year late because club renovation delayed it.

Elspeth was nine.

We attended.

Maude attended separately.

No ban.

Her suspension had ended long ago.

On the wall:

ROWAN FAMILY — CABANA FOURTEEN.

Photographs.

Edmund.

Maude.

Gareth.

Me.

Elspeth.

No bloodline chart.

No colored distinctions.

A small caption explained:

Cabana license transferred by Edmund Rowan to trust for granddaughter Elspeth Rowan in 2023, with reserved occupancy for Maude Rowan through 2026.

Dry.

Accurate.

Elspeth read.

“They put my name.”

“Yes.”

Then she saw cropped photograph’s restored full version.

She smiled.

Maude stood several feet behind.

Elspeth noticed.

“Grandma.”

Maude came closer.

“Hi.”

Elspeth pointed.

“You’re in it.”

Maude looked.

“Yes.”

“Even though you were mean.”

Children.

Maude breathed.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Elspeth asked.

Not angry.

Curious.

I almost intervened.

Didn’t.

Maude said:

“Because being wrong doesn’t mean I wasn’t there.”

There.

That answer surprised me.

Elspeth nodded.

“Good.”

No erasure.

History can include people who failed.

Later the club photographer asked for a current Rowan family photograph.

We froze.

Maude looked at Elspeth.

Not Gareth.

Elspeth decided:

“Grandma can be in.”

Maude’s eyes filled.

Then Elspeth added:

“But I stand by Mom.”

Perfect.

We arranged.

No hierarchy.

No bloodline.

One picture.
