Chapter 2 - THE EMERGENCY ROOM

Meadow needed three Steri-Strips behind her ear.

No stitches.

The pediatrician documented:

Multiple superficial clipper abrasions.

Extensive involuntary hair removal.

Acute emotional distress.

No concussion.

No deeper injury.

I sat beside her while a nurse cleaned her scalp.

Meadow flinched every time cotton touched the raw skin.

“I’m sorry.”

The nurse smiled softly.

“You don’t apologize for being hurt.”

Meadow looked at me.

I had spent the previous hour telling her the same thing.

Sometimes children believe strangers faster because family words come with history.

A child advocate arrived before midnight.

Her name was Carmen Ruiz.

She asked if Meadow wanted me in the room.

“Yes.”

Then questions.

Did Grandma tell you she was cutting your hair?

“Yes.”

Did you agree?

“No.”

Did you try to leave?

“Yes.”

What happened?

“Daddy closed the door.”

My body went cold.

Carmen’s expression did not change.

“Did Daddy touch you?”

“He put me back in the chair.”

I looked away.

Dustin had not merely known.

He participated.

“What did Grandma say?”

Meadow stared at her hands.

“She said good girls sit still.”

“Anything else?”

“She said if I cried Mom would make trouble.”

I closed my eyes.

Carmen asked:

“Was Grandma’s phone already there?”

“Yes.”

“Who put it there?”

“Daddy.”

My heart stopped.

Not Judith.

Dustin.

“When?”

“Before.”

“Did he say why?”

Meadow thought.

“He said Grandma needed proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“I don’t know.”

May you like

Neither did I.

Yet.
