The actual chain remained in police evidence until appeals ended.
Decades later, Lily was asked whether she wanted it returned.
“No.”
“Destroyed?”
“Yes.”
Evidence disposal handled it.
No ceremony.
No photographs.
No video.
Metal went away.
The DNA reports remained in legal archives and private family records.
Lily kept the verified one.
Not because she needed proof Daniel was her father.
Because history mattered.
One day Grace found the envelope.
“What’s this?”
Lily looked.
“An old test.”
“For what?”
“To prove Grandpa Daniel was my biological father.”
Grace frowned.
“Did he not know?”
“He should have.”
That answer stayed with me.
Should have.
Not because biology is always obvious.
Because when uncertainty matters, adults owe children honest process.
