Chapter 20 - MARGARET’S RELEASE

Margaret qualified for supervised release in old age after serving the required portion of her sentence and meeting health criteria.
No secret influence.
No Whitmore privilege exemption.
Ordinary process.
She moved into a condominium.
Permanent fiduciary bar.
No family office.
No company authority.
No contact with Lily unless Lily consented.
Lily was sixteen.
“No.”
At eighteen:
“No.”
At twenty-one:
“Maybe once.”
Maya’s successor arranged a mediated meeting.
I did not attend.
Daniel did not.
Lily told us later.
First question:
“Why did you chain me?”
Margaret cried.
Lily waited.
“Because you kept trying to come inside.”
“That’s what you said then.”
Margaret nodded.
“The real answer is that I wanted you to understand I controlled whether you belonged.”
Silence.
“Why?”
“Because I had spent years making paperwork say your branch did not exist. Every time you came into the family as Daniel’s daughter, it reminded me the paperwork was a lie.”
Lily absorbed that.
Then:
“Did you hate me?”
“No.”
“That almost makes it worse.”
“Yes.”
“Did you love me?”
“In a possessive way that did not protect you.”
Lily nodded.
“Okay.”
The meeting lasted twenty-four minutes.
No hug.
No forgiveness declaration.

She never scheduled another.
Sometimes one truthful conversation is enough.
