Chapter 19 - MARGARET’S FIRST LETTER

Margaret wrote Lily when she was eleven.

All correspondence went through counsel and Maya.

Lily chose to read.

My granddaughter,

I told you that you were not a real Whitmore.

Lily stopped.

“She wrote it.”

“Yes.”

Margaret continued:

I knew the test I relied on was not properly verified. I wanted the result to be true because it made the family structure easier for me to control.

No euphemism.

Then:

I used adult money and trust rules to justify treating a child cruelly.

Lily whispered:

“Good.”

I looked at her.

“She said it right.”

Yes.

Then:

The chain was not discipline. It was humiliation. Drawing on your face was humiliation. Making you wait for food was humiliation.

Lily’s eyes filled.

Margaret wrote:

I am sorry.

No request for forgiveness.

No demand for visitation.

Lily folded the letter.

“Do I have to answer?”

“No.”

She did not.

At thirteen, she read another.

At fifteen, still no visit.

Margaret’s remorse did not create entitlement to access.

That remained one of the healthiest things our family ever learned.
