Margaret’s home stood empty during her incarceration.
Mark did not want it.
Daniel did not either.
The property belonged to a family residence trust.
Not Margaret personally.
The trustees proposed selling.
Lily heard adults discussing it.
“Is that the chain house?”
“Yes.”
“Can they knock down the porch?”
“Maybe.”
“Why?”
“Do you want them to?”
She thought.
“No.”
That surprised me.
“Why?”
“It’s a porch.”
Exactly.
Buildings do not commit abuse.
People do.
The trustees sold the house to an unrelated family.
No memorial.
No demolition ceremony.
The post remained.
Probably.
I never checked.
Lily did not need to control architecture to heal.
At eight, she stopped talking about the chain often.
At nine, she asked why the turtle had been drawn.
“Because adults let a joke become cruel.”
“Was the cousin bad?”
“He was a teenager doing something an adult encouraged.”
“Did he say sorry?”
“Yes.”
“Okay.”
She had already moved past him.
He had apologized privately years earlier.
No forced friendship.
