Chapter 23 - DANIEL’S APOLOGY TO ME

Daniel apologized properly twenty years after the original test.
Not because he had never apologized before.
Because this time he understood what he was apologizing for.
We were at Lily’s veterinary-school graduation.
He stood beside me afterward.
“Can I say something?”
“Yes.”
“I used to apologize for doubting you.”
I waited.
“That wasn’t the whole betrayal.”
“No.”
“I handed our child’s identity to my mother because I was scared to ask you a question directly.”
“Yes.”
“Then when the false result came back, I told myself loving Lily anyway made me noble.”
That one hurt.
He continued.
“It wasn’t noble. I let uncertainty become permission for my family to treat you both as less.”
I looked at him.
“Thank you.”
“Do you forgive me?”
I smiled sadly.
“I did a long time ago.”
His eyes filled.
“That doesn’t mean I should’ve stayed married.”
“No.”
He nodded.
We hugged.
Not romantic.
No rekindling.
History settling into its proper shape.
Daniel later remarried.
I did too.
Years earlier, after enough distance.
My second husband, Michael Reed—not related to anyone in the Whitmore mess—was an emergency physician who hated corporate galas.
Excellent qualification.
Lily called him Michael.
Never Dad unless she wanted.
She never did.

Daniel remained Dad.
