Chapter 17 - JESSICA AND MARK

Jessica stayed separated from Mark for almost a year.

Then they tried counseling.

Not because of pressure.

Because she still loved him.

Her requirements were specific.

No family governance role.

Financial transparency.

Independent accounting.

No minimizing Margaret.

Mark accepted.

He had completed probation.

Repaid civil obligations.

Worked at a manufacturing firm unrelated to Whitmore Holdings.

Lower prestige.

He seemed happier.

Jessica eventually moved back.

Their children kept their relationship with Lily.

One cousin apologized:

“Grandma told us you weren’t really Uncle Daniel’s.”

Lily said:

“I am.”

“I know.”

“Okay.”

Children can close files quickly when adults stop reopening them.

Mark asked me once:

“Do you forgive me?”

“No.”

He looked surprised.

Then I added:

“I also don’t spend much time hating you.”

He nodded.

“That’s fair.”

We were never close.

We became functional.

Family does not require intimacy with everyone sharing a surname.
