Dr. Hart retired after thirty-four years in education.
Eamon was twenty-three.
He attended the retirement reception.

He laughed.
“That’s my official name?”
“Administrative shorthand.”
He thanked her.
“For what?”
“Not believing I cheated.”
She looked genuinely puzzled.
“You were five.”
“Adults believed stranger things.”
She nodded.
“Fair.”
Then she said:
“My job was not to believe you because you were adorable.”
He laughed.
“It was to verify.”
