Chapter 12 - MY SLAP

Tilda filed a police report about the slap.

She had every right.

Video from a guest’s phone showed it clearly.

I struck her after Eamon was already behind me.

She fell into the dessert table.

Bruising along her hip.

Minor wrist sprain.

No fracture.

The prosecutor considered context.

My son had just been assaulted by having a medal violently ripped from his neck and knocked down.

I acted seconds later.

Still:

The immediate need to protect him had passed.

I accepted a diversion agreement on a misdemeanor assault charge.

Anger-management course.

Restitution for Tilda’s medical copay and the destroyed dessert table I caused.

No criminal conviction after successful completion under the program terms.

Some relatives were furious.

“She deserved it.”

That sentence scared me.

I had spent months teaching Eamon adults could not rewrite rules because they wanted something badly.

I could not teach:

Unless you’re angry enough.

At dinner, Eamon asked:

“Why you go class?”

“Because I hit Aunt Tilda.”

“She hurt me.”

“Yes.”

“So why?”

“Because I could have protected you without hitting her after you were safe.”

He thought.

“Would you do again?”

“No.”

That answer took effort.

Then:

“If she hurt me again?”

“I would stop her.”

“Hit?”

“If I had to use safe, necessary force to protect you, I would. But being angry afterward is different.”

Five-year-old face.

Total confusion.

Fair.

“Rules complicated.”

“Yes.”

“Can we have ice cream?”

Much better topic.

The course helped more than I expected.

Not because I had a general violence problem.

Because I realized how quickly humiliation can make retaliation feel righteous.

Tilda had humiliated my child.

I wanted her body to absorb my anger.

That was not protection.

I hated seeing the sentence clearly.

Useful things are often unpleasant.

Then Tilda’s criminal financial investigation accelerated.

My slap case ended before hers began.

Good.

Separate conduct.

Separate consequences.

No one got to trade one for the other.
