The Marlowe Education Trust was too dependent on family liaison.
That became obvious.
Reforms:
Direct parent communication.
Separate beneficiary portals.
No cross-account reimbursement without independent review.
Provider verification above thresholds.
No family member submitting claims for another parent’s child without direct consent.
Annual child-safe summaries once age appropriate.
Audit triggers for unusual expense patterns.
The trustee also ended the “future descendant reserve” ambiguity that allowed Tilda’s early transfer.
Each daughter-family branch became separately accounted.
Unused amounts stayed with branch purpose unless independent trustees approved true shared expenses.
I did not become trustee.
Neither did Grant.
Professional management remained.
Good.
Parents are not automatically good fiduciaries because they love children.
Tilda had proved that.
So had my own lack of attention, in a quieter way.
I began reading Eamon’s statements.
Not obsessively.
Quarterly.
He had enough for education.
No need to turn him into a financial project.
Maisie had enough too.
After restitution and reforms, neither child’s future was ruined.
That mattered.
