Chapter 9 - THE PRENATAL RESULT

My clinic confirmed what destroyed Margaret’s defense and Daniel’s story simultaneously.
The prenatal genetic report became available six weeks before the miscarriage.
A login from Daniel’s phone opened it.
Downloaded PDF.
Result:
Male fetus.
I never saw it.
At home that evening, Daniel told me the portal still showed pending.
The next morning he tied me to the porch.
Margaret said:
“Another daughter. I know it.”
Daniel said:
“She always fails.”
He knew.
I stared at the access report until Helen took it away.
“He knew.”
“Yes.”
“He kept saying daughters.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“We need evidence.”
“I don’t need evidence to know he lied.”
“No. We need evidence to know why.”
That became the question.
If the abuse were truly about producing a son, why continue after he knew?
Margaret reacted violently when her lawyer told her.
“He knew?”
Her proffer transcript captured it.
“He told me there was no result.”
The prosecutor asked:
“Would you have stopped participating if you knew the fetus was male?”
Margaret began crying.
“I don’t know.”
That answer was uglier and more honest than yes.

Her prejudice had been a justification.
Daniel’s lie exposed that it was not the cause.
