Chapter 26 - MARGARET’S LAST VISIT
Margaret was seventy-six when Lily asked to see her.
Years after sentence.
Supervised therapy room.
Emma declined.
I did not attend.
Lily told me afterward.
“Grandma looks tiny.”
“She got older.”
“She apologized.”
“How?”
“She said she blamed you for girls because blaming women was what her mother taught her.”
I waited.
“And?”
“She said knowing Noah was a boy made her realize Daniel used her.”
“That’s about Daniel.”
“I told her that.”
I smiled.
“What did she say?”
“That she was cruel before Daniel lied.”
Good.
Lily asked Margaret:
“If he never lied, would you think it was okay?”
Margaret answered:
“I hope I would have learned. I cannot promise who I would have been.”
Honest.
Lily hugged her at the end.
