Registered eighteen months earlier.
Owner:
Derek Sloan.
Business purpose:
digital education and entertainment.
Nothing illegal in that.
Bank deposits:
approximately $286,000 gross over eighteen months.
Not all profit.
Payment processors.
Subscription service.
Video hosting.
Affiliate income.
Merchandise.
Again:
A digital business.
Could be completely unrelated to the children.
Except the dates aligned.
The phone contained export folders labeled:
HL RAW.
HL CUT.
HL MEMBERS.
Still not proof of content until investigators obtained server records.
Derek’s attorney sent a second letter.
Hard Lessons is a lawful parenting-commentary and humor enterprise featuring staged, consensual family entertainment. No child was harmed for content.
Staged.
Consensual.
Now we had the defense before we had public accusation.
Naomi read it twice.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“He is saying children were staged actors.”
“Sadie wasn’t.”
“Exactly.”
Did he have releases?
That became important.
Digital files included parental consent forms for some children.
Not Sadie.
Not all cousins.
Some adults had signed releases for harmless family challenge footage.
One cousin’s parents remembered.
“Derek said he was making funny family videos.”
“What did he film?”
Their son trying sour candy.
Water-balloon games.
Messy cooking.

That mattered.
Hard Lessons was not automatically an abuse enterprise from the beginning.
It may have started with benign content.
Then changed.
Investigators had to separate.
The family fractured around that distinction.

Derek is a monster.

I wanted neither.
I wanted facts.
Then one parent called me.
A cousin named Beth.
Her nine-year-old daughter appeared in one of the concerning thumbnails.
Beth had signed a release.
“Am I responsible?”
“No.”
“You haven’t even heard what I signed.”
“Then tell me.”
She had authorized:
family-safe challenge recordings.
No injury.
No humiliation beyond age-appropriate games.
“I thought it was like obstacle courses.”
“Did you watch finished clips?”
“Some.”
“Anything bad?”
“No.”
Then:
“Did Derek ever ask for something stronger?”
Beth went quiet.
“Once.”
“What?”
“He said the audience liked genuine reactions.”
“What did that mean?”
“I asked.”
“And?”
“He said surprises.”
“Did you agree?”
“No.”
Good.
Boundary.
Derek apparently stopped asking Beth.
So he knew some adults would refuse.
That mattered.
Then Owen’s forensic interview added another detail.
“Dad said boring videos don’t pay.”
“How did he make them not boring?”
“Make people mad.”
“How?”
Owen shrugged.
“Take stuff.”
“Did he ever tell you to hurt anyone?”
“No.”
“Did he hurt you?”
Owen stared at the floor.
“Sometimes.”
“What did he call it?”
“Getting the reaction.”
There.
Not central secret yet.
But the vocabulary was becoming consistent.
Then:
“Did he ever tell you not to tell your mom?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“She ruins content days.”
Natalie left the building and vomited in the parking lot.
No parent can hear that without rewriting every weekend.
I sat beside her.
She said:
“I sent him there.”
“You followed the custody schedule you had.”
“I should have known.”
“You raised concerns.”
“Not enough.”
“Natalie.”
She looked at me.
“You do not get to use evidence you learned this week to convict yourself four years ago.”
She laughed bitterly.
“Navy paperwork?”
“No. Human chronology.”
That evening police confirmed the private membership portal contained videos involving minors.
How many were problematic?
Unknown.
How many staged?
Unknown.
How many posted without consent?
Unknown.
No public claims yet.
Then the platform froze Derek’s creator account.
Revenue stopped.
Within an hour, Derek tried to log in from a second device.
The platform captured it.
He then attempted to delete one folder.
Deletion failed because of preservation hold.
