Chapter 23 - THE RELATIVES

The family apologized badly.

At first.

Rachel:

“I’m sorry this happened at my house.”

Not her crime.

Bryn:

“I’m sorry I laughed at Derek’s jokes before.”

Closer.

Peter:

“I should have known.”

No.

You should have acted when you did know.

We worked through it.

Not in one dramatic dinner.

Months.

One conversation at a time.

The family learned a new phrase:

Are they laughing too?

Because a prank is not automatically harmless because adults laugh.

Are the children laughing too?

If not:

Stop.

Check.

Ask.

Another:

No forced physical games.

No throwing kids into pools.

No taking medical devices.

No filming a child’s distress for entertainment.

Obvious rules.

Apparently not obvious enough.

Rachel created a no-posting rule at her house.

Not forever.

Guests asked before putting children online.

Parents chose.

Older kids got asked too.

Not perfect legal consent system.

Basic respect.

Then someone complained:

“We’re making family gatherings feel formal.”

I said:

“Good.”

They laughed.

I did too.

Navy paperwork had won.

Sadie returned to swimming lessons.

Her grip strength recovered fully.

Orthopedic discharge.

No permanent impairment expected.

She still pulled her hand back when someone’s foot came near it.

Therapist said:

Normal.

Time.

At one lesson, another child accidentally stepped on her sandal.

Sadie screamed.

Then realized.

Cried.

The other child apologized.

Nothing else happened.

That was important.

Accidents were becoming accidents again.

Not threats.
