Chapter 17 - THE EDITOR

The editor’s testimony worried prosecutors.

He could help both sides.

Marcus Dean.

Thirty-one.

Freelance video editor.

Never met our family in person.

Derek uploaded footage.

Marcus cut clips.

Added captions.

Music.

Graphics.

He testified under immunity? Not necessary if not charged. Subpoenaed.

He said:

“Derek told me child content was staged or parent-approved.”

That helped Derek.

Then:

“Did you ever doubt that?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Owen’s model-airplane video.

A cousin crying over ice cream.

“Did you ask?”

“Yes.”

“What did Derek say?”

“Real reactions perform better.”

Prosecutor:

“Did he say the distress was caused deliberately?”

“Not explicitly.”

Defense used that.

Good.

Then the pool planning file.

Marcus had created the project template:

HELICOPTER MOM SNAPS.

Before party.

Why?

Derek messaged him:

Probably getting Marina today.

Meaning?

“I assumed family argument.”

“Did you know a child would be hurt?”

“No.”

Again.

No giant conspiracy.

Then Marcus admitted he received a bonus tied to membership retention.

Did that motivate him to ignore warning signs?

“Probably.”

Did he ever tell Derek to harm kids?

“No.”

Did he edit videos that, in hindsight, hid provocation?

“Yes.”

The model-airplane clip.

He cut the beginning because Derek said:

Too slow.

Not because he knew it proved abuse.

Still.

Marcus became uncomfortable.

Eventually quit before the pool incident.

Why?

“Family content was getting mean.”

That word from an outsider mattered.

Not illegal.

Mean.

The escalation was visible even without full context.

Then defense showed three clips where children clearly laughed after staged upset.

Hard Lessons was not pure cruelty.

Correct.

The jury would see nuance.

That helped credibility.

Prosecutors did not resist.

One juror later said that distinction mattered.

May you like

The state was not asking them to hate Derek’s personality.

Only to judge documented acts.
