Chapter 22 - OWEN’S FATHER

Derek went into custody.

Owen’s relationship with him did not end.

It changed.

Letters first.

Screened appropriately.

No case pressure.

Derek wrote:

I am sorry I made you hold cameras when you wanted to be a kid.

Owen read it twice.

Then asked Natalie:

“Do I have to write back?”

“No.”

He did anyway.

One sentence:

I hated content days.

Derek’s reply:

I know now.

That was the beginning.

Not forgiveness.

Information.

Family court allowed structured visits later under facility rules.

Natalie took Owen when he requested.

I did not attend.

No reason.

Owen came back and told Sadie:

“My dad looks weird without hair gel.”

She laughed.

Children reclaim adults through ridiculous details.

Then:

“He said sorry about your hand.”

Sadie shrugged.

“Okay.”

No message passed to me.

Good.

I did not ask Owen to become courier.

Then Sadie’s civil settlement finalized.

Derek’s insurer covered medical costs under disputed provisions? Intentional act likely not. Let's say Derek personally paid portion; business general liability covered some negligent production claims but not assault. Need simple.

Settlement funded:

Uncovered medical bills.

Therapy.

A modest protected account for Sadie.

No control to her at six.

No secret fortune.

No NDA preventing discussion.

Derek admitted civil responsibility for the intentional contact.

Good.

I donated none of it.

It belonged to Sadie.

Not mine to turn into moral performance.

Then Natalie’s case reached agreement.

Derek retained parental rights.

No termination.

Joint legal custody suspended during incarceration.

Natalie primary.

Future expansion after release required evaluation.

No camera/content creation.

No using Owen in any commercial media while minor without independent written consent from Natalie and, as age appropriate, Owen.

That last clause mattered.

Not because children can legally contract like adults.

Because their assent deserved a place too.

The family structure was repaired through limits.

Not erasure.
