Chapter 13 - THE STORAGE DRIVE

The storage drive added volume.

Not necessarily crimes.

Hundreds of project files.

Most adult content.

Harmless.

Some embarrassing.

Some dumb enough to make civilization seem optional.

Investigators cataloged.

No public dump.

The important discovery was chronology.

Hard Lessons began clean.

First six months:

Adults.

Consensual pranks.

Commentary.

Family cooking disasters.

Fitness.

Then the first child challenge.

Signed parent release.

Harmless.

High engagement.

Then more.

Then “real reactions.”

Escalation over nine months.

That mattered for defense.

Derek had not founded a company intending to abuse children.

He drifted.

Then chose.

Then chose again.

Then monetized the pattern.

Then rationalized.

Motive does not need an origin story where someone wakes evil.

The drive also contained deleted drafts.

One showed Owen crying behind a locked bedroom door.

Full raw file revealed Derek held the knob from outside for forty-eight seconds.

Owen begged to be let out.

Derek laughed.

Then opened it.

Posted version began after the door opened.

Caption:

Owen learns not to panic when alone.

That was a major evidentiary reversal.

The final video made it appear Derek was helping the child regulate after an anxiety episode.

The raw video showed Derek caused the episode.

Same pattern as the inhaler stories in other families? Different story. But here pattern.

The prosecution added unlawful restraint/endangerment theory based on that incident.

Defense:

Forty-eight seconds in a bedroom as a parenting exercise is not criminal confinement.

Court would decide.

Then another raw clip cleared Derek of one allegation.

A cousin claimed he had pushed her son into a kiddie pool.

Video showed the boy jumped himself during a game.

Good.

Claim removed.

The cousin apologized.

I respected her more for doing it.

Truth had to be allowed to help Derek when true.

Otherwise we were only building another content narrative.

Then the drive showed I had appeared in one old Hard Lessons clip.

Without knowing.

At a family barbecue, Derek filmed me making everyone sign a boating waiver before taking kids onto a rented pontoon boat.

He edited it with mocking music and titled:

NAVY MOM DECLARES WAR ON FUN.

I laughed when Naomi showed me.

“What?”

“That’s actually funny.”

She stared.

“It is.”

The clip was harmless.

No issue.

I had been public enough in the scene.

No damages worth pursuing.

Not every unauthorized joke becomes a case.

More importantly, the clip explained Derek’s audience relationship to me.

He had turned me into a recurring character:

the overprotective sister.

The bureaucrat.

The woman who ruined fun with safety rules.

The pool incident would have fit perfectly.

Sadie gets hurt.

Derek mocks.

Marina overreacts.

Except the raw reality was too ugly.

And Owen stopped filming before Derek could control the ending.

Then investigators found a draft title:

WHEN HELICOPTER MOM FINALLY SNAPS.

Created thirty minutes before the pool incident.

My brother had planned for my anger too.

May you like

He did not just want Sadie’s tears.

He wanted me to become content.
