Chapter 5 - THE VOICE MEMO

The voice memo was convincing.
Gideon’s voice.
Or close enough.
“I should never have put Maris on the house. I was thinking about the baby, not what happens if this marriage fails.”
Fourteen seconds.
Laurel received it from Vivienne.
Brenda heard it.
Two other relatives.
I had not.
Until now.
Gideon listened twice.
“That isn’t me.”
Forensic audio analysis began.
Not instant AI detection.
No magical certainty.
The expert found:
Audio splicing.
Different background noise between phrases.
Likely constructed from multiple genuine recordings.
Could not yet identify sources.
Then Laurel remembered a family dinner months earlier.
Gideon said:
“I should never have put that contractor on the house renovation.”
Different meaning.
Another business call:
“I was thinking about the baby.”
Another argument with Naomi about an insurance structure:
“What happens if this deal fails?”
Pieces.
Someone assembled.
Who had access?
Family office recorded some business calls for note-taking.
Vivienne had administrative access.
Laurel did too.
Did Laurel make the audio?
She denied.
Device metadata pointed to a Family Administration desktop account:
VIV_ADMIN.
Not proof Vivienne personally sat at keyboard.
Strong direction.
Then the postnup draft.
Vivienne told Laurel Gideon wanted Maris to sign three things:
Quitclaim deed returning my half of Sutton House.
Family conduct agreement.
Post-birth parenting memorandum.
The parenting memorandum was nonbinding in parts.
Still coercive.
Laurel assembled documents.
She believed Gideon wanted them?
“At first.”
“When did you stop believing?”
Her eyes dropped.
“The second week.”
“Why keep going?”
“Mom said if I backed out, I’d be helping you destroy the family.”
I almost laughed.
Powerful phrase.
Then:
“And because I had already recorded you.”
Sunk cost.
Shame.
Complicity.
Laurel’s role mattered.
Not innocent whistleblower.
Not mastermind.
She created documents.
Recorded without my informed consent in private spaces? State law on one-party recording varies. Some clips visible, some hidden. Could create civil issues.
She edited videos.
She showed me papers as though family-sanctioned.
But she had not shoved me.
Had not forged Gideon’s signature? She admitted adding graphic initials at Vivienne’s direction, believing they indicated approval. That was still wrong.
Potential civil exposure.
Maybe false instrument if used legally? Not yet.
She cooperated before charges.
Then Elena asked:
“What was Phase Three supposed to achieve?”
Laurel looked at me.
“Get you to sign or get footage of you refusing.”
“For Gideon?”
“Yes.”
“What would happen to footage?”
“Mom said Gideon would see it when he came home Thursday.”
“He came Monday.”
“Yes.”
Unexpected return collapsed schedule.
Then:
“What was Phase Four?”
Laurel closed her eyes.
“There wasn’t a folder yet.”
“What was planned?”
Silence.
“After the baby.”
My hand moved to my belly.
“What after the baby?”
Laurel looked terrified.
“Mom said once the grandson was born, Gideon would be easier to bring back into line.”
I stared.
“How?”
“I don’t know.”
“Bullshit.”
Elena touched my wrist.
Laurel started crying.
“I swear.”
Then:
“She said you’d be exhausted. Vulnerable. And if the house issue was already handled, you’d have less leverage.”
Leverage again.
No custody theft plan necessarily.
Economic/emotional pressure during postpartum recovery.
Ugly.
Then one thing I did not expect.
Laurel unlocked her personal phone.
“I have messages Mom doesn’t know I kept.”
Why keep them?
“At first for instructions.”
“Later?”
“Insurance.”
There.
Family loyalty always contains a backup plan.
She gave forensic consent for copies through counsel.
One message from Vivienne:
Dinner needs to be ugly enough that Gideon sees her temperament.
Laurel:
She’s eight months pregnant.
Vivienne:
Exactly. No one stays composed forever.
Another:
If she signs, stop filming.
Laurel:
And if she doesn’t?
Vivienne:
Then we give Gideon the wife he needs to leave.
My stomach turned.
Not because she planned divorce documents.
Because she planned a version of me.
Then a final message, sent the afternoon before the dinner:
Vivienne:
Keep the phone on Brenda. She knows her line.
Her line.
Brenda’s “charity case” comment was scripted.
May you like
The dinner had been staged.
And Vivienne had wanted my humiliation recorded from multiple angles.
