Chapter 14 - GIDEON’S MOTHER BEFORE SHE WAS MINE

Gideon told me the history in the nursery.
We sat on the floor because the rocking chair had not arrived.
His father, Arthur Sutton, built the house when Gideon was twelve.
Not from nothing.
He was already successful.
But the house became symbol.
Christmas.
Graduations.
Funerals.
Family dinners.
After Arthur died, Gideon inherited title.
Vivienne moved to a smaller property because the house felt unbearable.
But she never emotionally surrendered it.
When Gideon married me and we moved in, she reorganized cabinets.
Changed flowers.
Complained about paint.
I thought class control.
Some of it was grief.
Then Gideon added me to deed.
No one asked Vivienne.
No one needed to.
That was legally correct.
Emotionally, she felt erased.
Again.
Feeling does not create veto.
But now I understood the intensity.
Then grandson.
Vivienne had lost Arthur.
Felt she lost house.
Gideon traveled constantly.
Laurel had no children.
My unborn son became continuation.
Not a baby in her mind first.
A bridge.
Arthur.
House.
Name.
Legacy.
That was why she said:
Only useful for giving me a grandson.
She had reduced me to biological access to continuity.
Cruel.
Also rooted in grief she never processed.
Gideon said:
“She needs help.”
“Yes.”
“Do you care?”
“I care enough to want her to stop hurting people.”
He nodded.
No demand I sympathize.
Good.
Then my own part.
I had mocked her attachment to the house.
Once:
“It’s a building, Vivienne.”
Now I knew that was reductive.
Still not assault-worthy.
Both truths.
Then family therapy for Gideon alone with Vivienne? No-contact order prevented her with me, not necessarily Gideon. He could choose.
He did not meet her during probation first months.
Then through therapist, later.
Not now.
We kept conflict active.
Then business crisis.
Not conspiracy.
The senior-housing joint venture Gideon negotiated hit a financing delay because press coverage of family scandal made one institutional partner nervous? Could be unrealistic. Better partner asked governance questions due his personal distraction. But no material link.
Gideon had to travel one night.
He froze.
“I’m not leaving you.”
“I am not prison.”
“You’re thirty-six weeks.”
“My sister Clara is coming.”
Not previously introduced. Fine.
My older? I have a sister? Let's add younger sister Clara 31. Stayed.
Gideon traveled overnight.
We tested new communication protocol.
Video call.
Direct.
No intermediary.
He returned.
Nothing happened.
Small victory.
Then labor scare.
No.
Still pregnant.
Then Vivienne appealed conviction? Could happen later, but keep active.
More urgent: civil fraud hearing re the postnup and restitution. Vivienne refused to admit intent to deceive. We could sue for intentional infliction? Perhaps not necessary.
Instead, Elena pursued a protective civil order extending no-contact through postpartum period based on pattern.
Court granted six months.
Not forever.
Then family access.
Vivienne petitioned for prenatal? No rights.
No.
Then letters started arriving from relatives asking:
“When will Vivienne meet baby?”
He wasn’t born.
I tore none.
Saved none.
Gideon sent one response:
No decisions until after birth and after medical recovery. Do not ask Maris.
Good.
No using pregnant woman as customer-service desk.
May you like
Then the baby decided timing.
At thirty-seven weeks and two days, my water broke at 2:14 a.m.
