Chapter 16 - FORTY-EIGHT HOURS

Gideon listened to the recording three times.

Then said:

“She’s right.”

I looked at him.

“About what?”

“The old me.”

He sat beside Elias’s bassinet.

“I would have been furious.”

“Yes.”

“I would have confronted her.”

“Yes.”

“Then she would cry.”

Probably.

“Say she did it for me.”

Yes.

“Then I’d negotiate instead of reversing.”

There.

He knew.

“That’s why she expected you to sign?”

“Yes.”

He looked sick.

“I taught her consequences were temporary if she waited out my anger.”

That was his work.

Not mine.

Then our marriage got a stress test.

Sutton Residential Holdings had a serious project issue.

Not scandal.

A construction delay in Arizona.

Potential $4.6 million cost exposure.

Gideon needed three days away.

Elias was six weeks.

I had postpartum anxiety symptoms.

Not diagnosis initially.

I was scared he would leave and something would happen.

Old scheme had conditioned me too.

He said:

“I can send the COO.”

“Should you?”

“No.”

There.

He needed to go.

I hated it.

Our therapist asked:

“What would a safe version look like?”

My sister staying.

Night nurse one night.

Direct calls.

No family intermediaries.

Return date.

Backup if flight changes.

We did it.

Gideon left.

Vivienne did not materialize.

No fake messages.

No folder.

He called.

I answered.

Elias screamed through half.

Gideon returned on time.

Ordinary.

That was repair.

Then appeal decision.

The appellate court upheld Vivienne’s assault conviction.

No reversal.

It found dinner-planning evidence relevant to intent but limited enough.

Sentence stood.

She completed probation conditions.

No-contact criminal order set to expire months later, but civil settlement longer.

Then Brenda.

She faced no criminal charge.

Civil claim?

She had scripted insult, no physical act.

I did not sue.

She sent apology.

I did not answer.

Then guest women.

Most disappeared from our lives.

No dramatic ban list.

Invitations simply stopped.

Some relatives remained.

Bethany, who admitted silence.

Rachel.

My sister Clara.

People who told truth.

Family got smaller.

Then Gideon’s business board asked him to formalize conflict-of-interest and family-access policies because his mother’s informal office had touched business communications.

No evidence company money misused.

Still control weakness.

Policies:

No family-member administrative access without role.

No personal call filtering through untrained family staff.

No signature stamp outside legal/finance custody.

No “family office” handling company systems.

Good.

The scandal created governance improvements without secret share plots.

Then a newspaper article framed:

SUTTON EXECUTIVE’S MOTHER RAN SHADOW FAMILY OFFICE.

Exaggerated.

Gideon declined to comment.

No media war.

The article died after two days.

Life is kinder when not every scandal trends forever.

Then Elias smiled at me for the first time.

Maybe gas.

May you like

I chose smile.

Not everything needed verification.
