Chapter 4 - THE CHARITY CASE

I had heard the phrase for two years.
Charity case.
Usually indirectly.
Vivienne never said it around Gideon.
Not until the dinner, when Brenda said it for her.
Why?
My background.
That was the obvious answer.
But Elena asked me to trace the phrase.
First time?
At our engagement party.
Brenda told someone:
“Vivienne always worried Gideon would bring home a charity case.”
I laughed then.
Gideon did too when I told him.
He said:
“Mom thinks anyone without inherited real estate needs assistance.”
We both treated it as class snobbery.
Then after marriage:
Charity bride.
Scholarship wife.
Community outreach.
Jokes.
I stopped laughing.
Gideon told Vivienne once:
“Enough.”
She stopped around him.
Not around me.
Then my pregnancy.
The phrase changed.
“Lucky girl.”
“You secured your place.”
“A son changes everything.”
“Now you have permanent leverage.”
Leverage.
I began seeing the shape.
Vivienne did not simply think I was poor.
She thought relationships were transactions.
My marriage gave me access.
Pregnancy increased leverage.
Birth would cement something.
But what?
Gideon’s estate was substantial.
Not billionaire fantasy.
He owned:
Sutton Residential Holdings.
Commercial property interests.
A majority stake in a specialty construction-management firm.
Investment accounts.
The house.
He had a prenuptial agreement.
So did I.
Separate property clearly defined.
Marital earnings handled under state law.
No surprise claim to his premarital company.
No financial apocalypse at birth.
Then Elena asked:
“Life insurance?”
“Yes.”
“Beneficiary?”
I was primary.
Our child contingent.
Normal.
“Estate plan?”
Updated after pregnancy?
Gideon hesitated.
“Drafted.”
“Signed?”
“Some.”
Naomi looked at him.
“What exactly did you sign before your trip?”
There.
He had executed a new will.
Not secret.
I knew generally.
He had also signed:
Healthcare directives.
Guardianship nomination.
A deed transferring Sutton House into a revocable living trust? That's trust overuse. Avoid. Maybe he executed a survivorship deed adding wife? Could be huge. But user standing warns trust overuse. Let's make he added wife as joint owner of the house by deed. That is concrete.
“You added Maris to the house title?”
I stared.
“What?”
Gideon looked at me.
“I was going to tell you when I got home.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s our home.”
My throat tightened.
Sutton House had been his before we met.
Vivienne treated it like ancestral territory.
Gideon had filed a deed two days before leaving.
Joint tenancy? Depending state. Let's keep "deed adding me as a co-owner with survivorship rights" with attorney confirmed.
Not company.
Not empire.
House.
That explained some panic.
“Did Vivienne know?” Elena asked.
Gideon looked toward Naomi.
“Family office received recorded deed notice because they pay property taxes.”
There.
Vivienne knew.
When?
Five weeks earlier.
Phase One began six weeks earlier.
Close.
Then another change.
Gideon had updated beneficiary designations on one investment account to include me and the child.
Again normal.
Not enough to explain obsession.
Then company buyout?
No.
Let’s keep motive emotional/class/property plus grandson.
Maybe family women saw house as dynasty property and thought Maris could own it. They want postnup to get her to disclaim house and agree baby stays. But central secret at ch10 should still be more layered: They fabricated an “unstable wife” dossier to get Gideon to sign a postnup/divorce after return, with the house deed as catalyst and Laurel recording. The legal mechanism could be one specific thing: Vivienne wanted Maris to sign a quitclaim deed returning her half of Sutton House and a postpartum separation agreement before birth, while using edited videos to tell Gideon she accepted money to leave. That seems plausible.
Need continue Ch4 with deed. Vivienne may have started scheme after learning deed.
Then Gideon receives email from title company showing Vivienne requested copy repeatedly.
Let's write.
The title company had logs.
Vivienne requested certified copies three times.
Once herself.
Twice through Family Administration.
Why?
No answer yet.
Then the deed disappeared from the home safe? Gideon kept copy elsewhere. Family office maybe.
That night, Vivienne’s attorney sent a letter:
Mrs. Sutton disputes the characterization that she assaulted Maris and asserts she was attempting to assist her after a verbal confrontation.
Video would refute.
Then:
She believes Maris has manipulated Gideon into alienating long-standing family relationships.
There.
Classic defense.
No mention of postnup.
Then older sister Laurel asked to speak directly to me.
Through counsel.
I agreed.
She entered looking exhausted.
“I’m sorry.”
“For recording me?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Mom told me Gideon was afraid you were after the house.”
I looked at Gideon.
He went white.
“I never said that.”
Laurel nodded.
“I know now.”
Then:
“She showed me a voice memo.”
“What voice memo?”
Laurel swallowed.
“Gideon saying he wished he’d never put Maris on the deed.”
Gideon stared.
“I never recorded that.”
Another fake.
May you like
The house was not the whole secret.
But it was the first thing Vivienne had needed us all to believe he regretted.
