Chapter 9 - THE FATHER’S SECRET
Grant had sent the message during an argument.
Claire told him she planned to take Lily to a hotel after meeting Renata. Grant believed she was overreacting and threatening to end their marriage.
“I meant I would stop her from making a reckless decision,” he said.
“You threatened to stop her,” Benson replied.
He had deleted the message after the crash because it made him look responsible.
He also told police they had not argued.
The lie gave Renata’s defense another path.
Grant had motive, anger, and access to Claire’s car.
The investigation temporarily restricted his unsupervised contact with Lily.
She returned to a specialized foster home for three nights while the court reviewed safety.
Grant blamed himself.
I did too.
Not for murder.
For giving Renata a believable alternative suspect.
The old tablet contained voice notes from Claire.
Most concerned foundation work.
One recorded Grant shouting in another room.
Another captured Claire saying, “He still thinks conflict disappears if he refuses to choose.”
That sentence described the man standing beside me.
He had ignored Claire’s warning, deleted evidence, and allowed Renata into Lily’s life because confronting either woman felt unbearable.
Renata petitioned to become Lily’s temporary guardian, arguing she was the only stable parental figure remaining.
The court rejected immediate placement but scheduled a hearing.
If Grant were charged or disqualified, Renata could gain legal access to the child she had terrified.
Then the laboratory reported results from Claire’s preserved blood.
A rare sedative was present in a concentration inconsistent with her prescriptions.
It could impair coordination and judgment.
The compound had been purchased by Callahan Security for veterinary emergencies at the estate.
Harris controlled the supply log.
One vial was missing.
His electronic signature recorded the removal.
Harris denied taking it.
