Chapter 5 - WHAT GRANT HAD IGNORED
Grant denied changing the password.
His phone records placed him in the hospital room when the reset occurred.
Someone had access to an old family email account created during his marriage to Claire.
He admitted Renata knew the recovery questions.
“She helped manage everything after the crash.”
“Everything?” I asked.
“Insurance. Lily’s appointments. Claire’s memorial foundation.”
He had given Renata the keys to the life Claire left behind.
Grant also admitted something else.
Before the crash, Claire believed money was disappearing from her foundation.
She asked Grant to review invoices connected to a youth-therapy program. He postponed it because his company was entering a merger.
“Did Renata handle those invoices?”
“Yes.”
The answer sat between us.
Grant had not caused Claire’s death.
But his refusal to look had created room for someone else.
The old emergency recording arrived.
Claire called 911 from the car moments before it left the road.
Only wind, rain, and Lily crying could be heard.
Then Claire said, “Renata, get away from the door.”
A crash followed.
The original transcript listed the name as “unknown female word.”
No investigator had connected it to a person.
Renata told police she had been at home that night.
Her phone location records supported her—until Benson discovered the data came from a device left charging in her apartment.
The account also showed a second phone.
A prepaid handset that moved toward the mountain road.
The records were too old for precise tower triangulation, but the direction matched.
Grant covered his face.
“She told me Claire was paranoid.”
I wanted to comfort him.
Instead I said, “And you believed the person Claire was afraid of.”
That evening, the hotel clerk called my room.
A package had arrived without a sender.
