Chapter 7 - THE SECURITY CHIEF’S LIE
Harris asked for counsel before explaining.
He had not known about the crash when Renata arrived at the garage.
She said Claire’s car had suffered a failed tire and that Grant wanted roadside tools collected before reporters found them.
Harris let her enter.
“What did she remove?” Benson asked.
“A red emergency bag.”
“Did you document it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“She had Grant’s family code.”
Grant stared at him.
“I never sent her.”
Harris had hidden the visit because he feared losing his job for violating procedure after Claire died.
His silence allowed the original investigation to conclude without knowing Renata accessed vehicle tools and security records.
The red emergency bag remained missing.
Harris surrendered his devices and was suspended as security chief while investigators examined his account.
The pressure on Grant intensified.
Renata’s lawyer argued every accusation came from people protecting themselves: a violent nanny, a careless father, and a security chief who lied.
That argument was effective because each description contained part of the truth.
Lily’s second interview produced one clear sentence.
“Mommy drank bitter water.”
Then she stopped speaking.
Claire’s preserved toxicology report showed alcohol below the legal limit and no common sedatives.
Benson requested reanalysis of stored blood and tissue for substances not included in the original panel.
The medical examiner warned that degradation could limit conclusions.
At the same time, auditors reviewed Claire’s foundation.
Renata had approved payments to three therapy vendors.
Two existed.
The third was registered to a mailbox and received $186,000 over eighteen months.
Grant recognized none of it.
The payment trail ended in an account closed days after Claire died.
The closing withdrawal was made in person.
Bank video had been retained only as low-resolution archive.
The woman at the counter wore a red coat.
Her face was hidden.
But when she signed the receipt, she used her left hand.
