Chapter 8 - THE MEMORY UNDER THE BED
Renata offered an explanation.
Claire created the false vendor to move foundation money away from Grant before filing for divorce. Renata merely helped close the account after her death.
Grant had never heard divorce mentioned.
That did not prove it was false.
A family-court investigator inspected the estate before deciding where Lily could safely live after hospital discharge.
Renata’s rooms were sealed.
Grant’s parenting plan was approved with supervision.
Lily returned home while I remained barred.
During the inspection, Lily crawled beneath her bed and refused to come out.
Grant sat on the floor without touching her.
“What do you need?”
She pushed a wooden music box toward him.
Claire had given it to her weeks before the crash.
Inside were small photographs and a broken silver chain.
No secret recording.
No murder weapon.
Only ordinary things.
Then Grant noticed the velvet lining had been cut and resewn.
Police opened it under documentation.
A storage receipt had been folded beneath the lining.
The unit was rented in Claire’s maiden name.
The access record showed one visit after her death.
Renata’s driver’s license had been scanned at the gate.
A warrant produced foundation ledgers, copies of vehicle-service invoices, and an old tablet with a cracked screen.
The tablet powered on but required a password.
Lily drew four shapes for the forensic technician: a moon, a house, a bird, and a seven.
The password worked.
Claire’s messages showed she had discovered the false vendor.
She had scheduled a meeting with Renata for the night of the crash.
One message read:
Bring every original invoice. If you lie again, I go to the police.
Renata replied:
Meet me alone. Lily should hear what her mother has done.
The crash was no longer an isolated accident.
It had happened after a confrontation arranged by Renata.
