Chapter 10 - THE ROAD BEGAN TO SPEAK
The central pieces finally started connecting.
The manufacturer recovered archived telematics from Claire’s vehicle. The original investigators had requested only speed and braking data, not connected-device history.
At 8:41 p.m., Renata’s prepaid phone paired with the car through Bluetooth.
At 8:52, the driver’s door opened on the mountain road.
At 8:54, the car began moving again.
At 8:57, the braking system registered pressure without the expected hydraulic response.
The data did not identify who damaged the system.
It proved the brakes failed after the roadside stop.
Claire’s tablet contained a photograph taken that afternoon.
Her car sat in the estate garage.
Renata stood near the open hood holding the red emergency bag.
She claimed she had been helping Claire check a warning light.
A vehicle engineer examined the wreck, preserved by the insurer in a secured storage yard because litigation had never fully closed.
The brake line showed a narrow cut partially concealed beneath abrasion from the crash.
The original inspection had attributed it to impact damage.
Under magnification, part of the cut predated the wreck.
The engineer would not call it intentional sabotage until further testing.
But the possibility changed the case.
Benson obtained a search warrant for Renata’s apartment.
No sedative.
No red bag.
No original invoices.
Investigators did find a receipt from an auto-supply store for a specialized line-cutting tool purchased the week Claire died.
Renata said it had been a gift for Grant.
Grant had never received it.
Then the estate’s veterinary records revealed who signed out the rare sedative on paper.
Not Harris.
Renata.
Her handwriting appeared beneath a notation claiming an injured deer required treatment.
No veterinarian had been called that day.
For the first time, the evidence supported a specific sequence:
Renata obtained the sedative.
Renata met Claire.
Renata entered the vehicle.
The brakes failed afterward.
But one question remained.
Lily had been in the back seat.
