Chapter 2 - THE REPORT WRITTEN FIRST
The officers separated us.
Renata was taken to a guest room with one officer. Grant remained in the library. I sat beside Lily in the small clinic maintained inside the estate while a paramedic examined her scalp.
The burn was painful but superficial. Several hairs had broken close to the skin. The doctor ordered hospital evaluation because heat injuries could deepen over several hours.
Lily refused to release my apron.
No one questioned her about her mother.
A child who spoke after two years of silence did not become a witness simply because adults were desperate for answers.
Detective Mara Benson arrived before the ambulance left.
She photographed the wand, stool, fallen curtain, and burned hair. Renata’s wrists showed redness from my grip. Her lower back was bruised from the bathtub.
I described exactly what I had done.
“I kicked her.”
“Why?”
“She reached for Lily after I took the wand.”
“Did Renata strike you?”
“No.”
Benson wrote without reacting.
Protecting Lily did not give me permission to invent cleaner facts.
Harris provided the emergency-call log.
Renata had contacted county dispatch before entering the bathroom. Her report said the nanny was becoming aggressive and might attack her during Lily’s morning grooming.
She had predicted my violence before I knew Lily was upstairs.
Grant listened from the library doorway.
“How did Emma know to go there?” Benson asked.
I showed her the message I had received from Lily’s tablet.
No words.
Only a photograph of the bathroom ceiling, accidentally sent at 9:12.
In one corner, Renata’s hand held the heated wand.
Lily had found a way to call me without speaking.
At the hospital, a forensic nurse documented the burn while a child specialist communicated with Lily through drawings and yes-or-no cards.
Lily drew a black road.
A broken car.
And a woman wearing Renata’s red coat.
Before anyone could ask what the picture meant, Grant’s attorney received an emergency petition.
Renata claimed I had coached Lily to accuse her of murder.
She asked the court to remove both me and Grant from contact until Lily could be “deprogrammed.”
