Chapter 25 - LILY MEETS RICHARD AS AN ADULT
Richard left prison years earlier.
Completed supervision.
Never returned to Vance corporate leadership.
He worked eventually as a consultant for small hospitality businesses after disclosures required by agreements.
He lived modestly relative to childhood.
Not poverty.
Consequences.
Lily maintained contact through adolescence.
At eighteen, she chose her own schedule.
At twenty-two, she asked him directly:
“Did you marry Mom because of the trust?”
I was not there.
She told me later.
His answer:
“I met her because my mother asked me to. I stayed because I loved her. I also let the possibility of her family claim affect decisions I made. I kept information from her because keeping her close benefited me.”
Lily asked:
“So yes?”
Richard said:
“Yes, partly.”
Good.
Painful.
Accurate.
Then she asked about the cake.
“Were you trying to make her look unstable?”
“No. I was trying to humiliate her because she wouldn’t do what I wanted.”
No strategic excuse.
Lily said:
“That’s worse.”
He answered:
“I know.”
She did not cut him off.
She also did not invite him into every part of her life.
When she married at twenty-seven, Richard attended.
Olivia did not.
She had died several years after release from ordinary illness.
Lily had chosen one supervised meeting with her grandmother at twenty-one.
Olivia apologized.
Lily listened.
