Chapter 13 - JULIAN’S FAILURE

Julian Sterling was not my rescuer.

My mother warned me.

I made him prove it.

We met alone only after months of legal work.

Public café.

My security consultant hated it.

I went anyway.

“What did you do to Amelia?”

He looked at his coffee.

“I sided with my father.”

“How?”

“Not physically.”

“I didn’t ask what you didn’t do.”

He nodded.

Amelia discovered that their father was using her trust branch as collateral influence in negotiations with Vance entities.

Legal at the time under temporary family governance.

She objected.

She also wanted to marry David Hart.

Edmund Sterling hated him because he had no money and criticized the family’s land practices.

Julian thought Amelia was being impulsive.

He carried messages.

Told their father where she planned to stay one weekend.

Edmund arrived.

Argument.

Amelia left again.

Then she disappeared permanently.

“Did Olivia know where she went?”

“I suspected.”

“Did you ask?”

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“That Amelia had contacted counsel and wanted no family contact.”

“Did you believe her?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because part of me was relieved.”

There.

He looked at me.

“If Amelia wanted nothing to do with us, then I didn’t have to choose between her and Father.”

The same cowardice wearing better tailoring.

“When you heard she died?”

“I hired investigators.”

“Did they find Mara Hart?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Her name change was sealed. David’s relatives protected her. Olivia’s office controlled some old communication records.”

“Did you challenge Olivia?”

“Not enough.”

He did not turn himself into victim.

Good.

Then he gave me Amelia’s unopened letter back.

“I read it.”

“It was addressed to you.”

“She said I would want to fix you because I couldn’t fix what I did to her.”

“That sounds like Mom.”

“Yes.”

“Was she right?”

“Yes.”

I leaned back.

“Then don’t.”

He smiled sadly.

“I’m trying.”

Our relationship began there.

Not uncle and niece instantly.

Two adults with a dead woman between them.

Over time, Julian told me stories.

Amelia stealing his car at sixteen.

Amelia hating pears.

Amelia reading mystery novels backward to see if endings were worth effort.

Things my mother had never told me.

I gave him stories too.

Mara restoring books.

Mara burning toast.

Mara teaching me to sew buttons.

Identity did not replace memory.

Amelia Sterling and Mara Hart were the same woman.

Neither family got to take the other name away.
