Chapter 21 - MY MOTHER’S REAL NAME

I began using both names in family records.

Amelia Sterling.

Mara Hart.

Not:

born Amelia, later pretending to be Mara.

Mara was not fake.

She built that life.

Worked.

Raised me.

Paid rent.

Got cancer.

Loved me.

Her chosen name deserved reality.

The Sterling archive wanted to title an exhibition:

THE RETURN OF AMELIA STERLING’S LINE.

I refused.

No public exhibition.

No ring behind glass.

No childhood photographs.

Julian backed me.

Good.

Instead, historians corrected internal family records and trust documents.

My legal name remained Maya Vance temporarily through divorce.

Afterward, I changed it.

Not Sterling.

Not Hart exactly.

Maya Hart Sterling?

I considered.

Then chose:

Maya Hart.

The name I grew up with.

Lily remained Lily Vance.

Her choice later.

Identity did not need symmetry.

I finished my art-history degree at thirty-one.

Part-time.

Humbling.

Students ten years younger complained about professors.

I loved it.

I specialized in provenance and cultural property.

Predictable.

Nora said:

“You became professionally obsessed with where objects come from.”

“Yes.”

“Therapy could’ve been cheaper.”

“No.”

I worked eventually for an independent museum consortium.

Not Sterling.

Not Vance.

I refused family employment.

Julian respected it.

At my first public lecture, someone asked whether my family scandal made me interested in provenance.

I answered:

May you like

“It made me interested in documentation. The objects did the rest.”

Enough.
