Chapter 15 - RICHARD’S ASSAULT CASE
The cake assault was simple compared with the trust.
Video.
Witnesses.
My injury.
Richard’s hand in my hair.
He could have gone to trial.
He did not.
He pled guilty to assault under the applicable charge, accepted a batterer-intervention program, community service, probation, and no-contact terms except custody processes.
Because I suffered no severe permanent injury, sentencing reflected that.
The court did not punish him for every marital cruelty through one charge.
Law is narrower than family memory.
At sentencing, the prosecutor asked whether I wanted to speak.
I did.
“Richard did not push my face into a cake because cake mattered. He did it because he wanted a room full of people to watch me become small.”
I looked at him.
“Our daughter watched too.”
He cried.
I continued.
“I do not need the court to describe my entire marriage. I need the record to describe this act accurately.”
The judge did.
Afterward, reporters asked whether I felt justice.
I said nothing.
Justice was too large a word for probation and a scar hidden in my hair.
But accountability had a case number.
That mattered.
The corporate case was not finished.
Forensic accountants concluded Amelia’s initials had been reproduced on at least four approvals after she disappeared.
One was clearly copied from an older signature card.
Another uncertain.
Who authorized?
An old Vance finance executive.
Dead now.
Olivia had reviewed some files.
Did she know signatures were false?
Emails suggested yes on two.
Not all.
Richard was a child when the earliest acts occurred.
His criminal exposure concerned later concealment.
He had participated in the pre-marital strategy.
Signed documents stating no known Sterling claimant existed during Northgate preparations.
By then he knew about me.
That mattered.
Federal and state investigators began examining false statements, fiduciary fraud, and obstruction.
