Chapter 24 - THE ORCHID RING LEAVES THE VAULT

For years, the ring stayed in secure storage.

Not because I feared theft.

Because wearing it felt like wearing everyone’s interpretation.

Heiress.

Claimant.

Lost Sterling.

Richard’s mistake.

Olivia’s threat.

Julian’s niece.

My mother’s daughter.

At forty-two, I took it out.

No anniversary.

No hearing.

I had dinner with Lily.

She was twenty.

“Are you wearing it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I wanted to.”

“That simple?”

“I’m practicing.”

She touched the orchid.

“Can I have it someday?”

“If you want.”

“Do I have to keep it?”

“No.”

“Can I sell it?”

“Yes.”

She looked horrified.

“I wouldn’t.”

“Then don’t.”

“What did Grandma Mara want?”

“She wanted me to be safe.”

“Does keeping jewelry make you safe?”

“No.”

“Then she probably wouldn’t care.”

My daughter had become annoying in the healthiest way.

I wore the ring on my right hand for dinner.

It fit after a jeweler inserted a removable sizing guard without altering the original metal.

For the first time, the orchid was simply visible.

No one recognized it.

Perfect.
