Chapter 19 - HELEN AND ETHAN
Helen rebuilt contact faster than Richard.
Not because she was innocent.
Because she was present.
She attended counseling.
Accepted no unsupervised visits at first.
Stopped calling Ethan sensitive as though it were a defect.
At nine, Ethan asked her:
“Do you still think I’m soft?”
Helen smiled sadly.
“I think I used that word when I meant uncomfortable.”
“What does that mean?”
“I didn’t like seeing boys cry.”
“Why?”
“Because Grandpa Richard didn’t.”
“That’s dumb.”
“Yes.”
“Do you cry?”
“More now.”
