Chapter 12 - HELEN’S TESTIMONY
Helen cooperated with the board before prosecutors decided whether she had criminal exposure.
She admitted signing the release without reading the technical package.
“I trusted Richard.”
Grace asked:
“Why?”
“He had run Carter Cycle Works for thirty years.”
“That is a résumé, not verification.”
Helen looked down.
She also admitted participating in bonus discussions.
Did she want the lender covenant met?
“Yes.”
Did she know held inventory counted?
“Yes.”
Did she understand C17 remained disputed?
“Not technically.”
Did she know Michael had not personally confirmed approval?
“No.”
“Did you ask him?”
“No.”
Why?
“Because Richard said he had.”
That pattern would become the company’s postmortem.
Not one villain controlling everyone.
A family hierarchy where asking Richard to prove something felt like disrespect.
Helen’s legal exposure remained limited.
Evidence did not show she fabricated data or signatures.
Regulators imposed governance penalties through settlement.
She resigned permanently from the company board.
No prison.
No fraud conviction.
She later told me:
“I thought supporting your father was loyalty.”
“What was it?”
“Sometimes laziness.”
That answer surprised me.
She cried.
“I did not want Ethan on a dangerous bicycle.”
“I believe you.”
“Do you forgive me?”
“Not the right question yet.”
