Chapter 20 - Dulcie Says No

Dulcie turned twelve.
Her school planned a spring fashion-show fundraiser.
Students could volunteer.
Dulcie wanted backstage art crew.
Ramona suggested runway.
Once.
Dulcie said:
“No.”
Ramona opened mouth.
Closed it.
“Okay.”
Evan later told Benedict.
That tiny moment traveled through family because everyone understood what it meant.
No persuasion.
No tears.
No:
You’d be perfect.
Okay.
Then Dulcie asked if Nell could come to her birthday.
Nell said yes.
Ramona would be there.
That complicated.
Dr. Warner prepared.
Rules:
Public bowling center.
Benedict and I present.
Ramona no physical contact unless Nell initiates or agrees.
No hair comments.
No appearance comparisons.
No private conversation.
If Nell wants leave, we leave.
Ramona agreed.
At party, she saw Nell for first time in nearly two years.
Her eyes immediately went to hair.
Now mid-back.
She caught herself.
Looked at face.
“Hi, Nell.”
“Hi.”
No apology there.
Already written separately but not yet direct.
Then bowling.
Ramona stayed across.
Dulcie beat everyone.
Nell accused lane of favoritism.
Normal.
At cake, Ramona almost said:
“You look—”
Stopped.
Then:
“Would you like another plate?”
Nell noticed.
Later in car:
“She wanted say pretty.”
“Maybe.”
“Why no?”
“Because we asked for no appearance comments.”
Nell thought.
“Can she say my dress cool?”
“If you want.”
She shrugged.
May you like
“Next time.”
Control returning in small permissions.
