Chapter 17 - The Campaign Comes Back

Six months after the incident, Northline contacted us through counsel.

Linden & Lace had delayed the long-hair campaign for unrelated production reasons.

They asked:

Would Nell still have any interest in a different general apparel casting?

Not hair-specific.

No pressure.

I wanted to say no immediately.

Benedict said:

“Ask Nell.”

I hated that.

Then realized he was right.

Dr. Warner helped us present without stakes.

“There is a company that liked your pictures before. They’re asking if you want to meet them for a regular clothes photo job.”

Nell stared.

“Because pretty?”

I winced.

Dr. Warner said:

“Because casting teams choose people for lots of visual reasons. It is work, not a grade on how beautiful you are.”

Good.

“What happens?”

Photos.

Fitting.

Waiting.

Could say no at any point.

Payment into protected child account under state rules.

Parent present.

No guarantee of booking.

Nell thought.

“Dulcie?”

“Not involved unless she chooses her own future work separately.”

Then:

“Will Ramona know?”

“Eventually maybe. She will not control it.”

Nell said:

“I want to try once.”

My heart raced.

Not from pride.

Fear.

Was she reclaiming or chasing validation?

Maybe both.

We allowed one agency meeting with therapist aware.

At the callback, Nell got bored after forty minutes.

She disliked bright lights.

Liked wardrobe rack.

Ate crackers.

The client chose another child.

Nell shrugged.

“Can we get tacos?”

I almost cried from relief.

No collapse.

No:

Am I ugly?

Just tacos.

That experience broke the spell.

Casting was not a beauty court.

Sometimes you fit brief.

Sometimes not.

Then she said:

“I don’t want do more.”

“Okay.”

Done.

No secret dream.

May you like

No wasted potential speech.

Her refusal was as valid as her yes.
