Chapter 16 - The Birthday Photographs

We almost deleted every photograph from Nell’s eighth birthday.

I could not look at them.

Before the haircut:

Nell running through yard.

Long braid.

Dulcie beside her.

Cake.

Benedict hanging lanterns.

Then after:

No official photographs.

Good.

The photographer stopped when crisis began.

Months later, Nell asked:

“Do we have birthday pictures?”

I froze.

“Yes.”

“Can I see?”

We sat with laptop.

She clicked.

At one photo, Dulcie was putting a paper crown on Nell’s head.

Both laughing.

Nell said:

“She wasn’t jealous.”

“People can feel many things.”

“But she was happy.”

“Yes.”

Then a photo of Ramona in background.

Nell stopped.

“Delete?”

Her choice.

“Do you want to?”

She stared.

“No.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

“She was there.”

Again.

History.

Not endorsement.

We kept.

Then Nell noticed her own braid.

Touched current hair, now several inches longer.

“Was really long.”

“Yes.”

“Too long?”

“If you liked it, no.”

She looked.

“I think I did.”

Then:

“Maybe I don’t want it that long again.”

“That’s okay.”

No loyalty to old self.

Trauma recovery did not require recreating the exact braid.

Her body could change because she wanted.

That would matter later.
